What to do in Santorini

An Island Unlike Any Other

Santorini is one of those rare places in the world that lives up to every expectation — and then exceeds them. Born from one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history (approximately 3,600 years ago), the island’s crescent shape, dramatic cliffs, and extraordinary light create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. But beyond the iconic images of blue domes and whitewashed houses lies a rich, layered destination: ancient ruins, volcanic beaches, world-class wineries, exhilarating hiking trails, and warm, deeply welcoming people.

Here is our guide to making the most of your time on this extraordinary island.

Hike the Fira–Oia Trail

The Fira-to-Oia trail is one of the most rewarding and scenic hikes in Greece. The route follows the caldera ridge, offering constant views of the volcano, nearby islands, and cliffside villages below. The total distance is just under 10.5 km, with the hike taking between 2.5 and 5 hours depending on pace and photo stops.

Starting from Imerovigli — which is already the highest point on the trail — guests at Salvatore have the rare privilege of beginning this legendary walk right from their doorstep. Head south to Fira for a mostly downhill, scenic 40-minute stroll, or head north to Oia for the full caldera experience. Many guests do the full trail in one direction and return by bus.

Essential: Start early (before 09:00 in summer), carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, wear sun protection, and use sturdy walking shoes.

Explore Skaros Rock

The dramatic volcanic promontory of Skaros rises just outside Imerovigli and is one of Santorini’s most compelling natural landmarks. Once home to Santorini’s oldest fortress, the short hike rewards visitors with spectacular views and a chance to explore one of the island’s most historic sites. The path down to Skaros from the village is accessible and well-marked, and passes the picturesque Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti along the way. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the full round trip.

Explore Oia

Oia is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in Santorini, with bright-coloured houses, stone paths, blue-domed churches, and sun-bathed verandas. Its small but well-appointed streets are lined with art galleries, jewellery boutiques, and some of the finest restaurants on the island. From the small harbour of Ammoudi, you can take a boat to the island of Thirassia, or enjoy swimming and sunbathing at Armenis beach. From Salvatore, Oia is reachable on foot along the caldera trail — one of the great pleasures of staying in Imerovigli.

Discover Fira

Fira, Santorini’s vibrant capital, sits just 3.5 km south of Imerovigli and is the island’s commercial and cultural hub. Walk along the caldera edge for uninterrupted views across the water, browse the boutique shops and rooftop restaurants, or take the iconic cable car down to the Old Port — a dramatic vertical descent that reveals just how extraordinary the island’s cliffs truly are. Fira is the best base for nightlife, shopping, and island connections.

Explore Ancient Akrotiri

The Akrotiri Archaeological Site offers a deeper look into Santorini’s ancient past. This preserved Minoan settlement was buried under volcanic ash, protecting multi-story buildings, streets, and artifacts for thousands of years. Often compared to Pompeii in its remarkable state of preservation, Akrotiri is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Aegean world. The site is covered and air-conditioned, making it an excellent midday activity. Located in the southwestern part of the island, it is approximately 30 minutes from Imerovigli by car or taxi.
