Wine Tasting & Santorini’s Vineyards

Few places in the world can claim a winemaking tradition as ancient and as distinctive as Santorini. Viticulture here dates back thousands of years — to the time of Ancient Greece, and according to legend, to Dionysus himself, who is said to have planted the island’s first vines. What has emerged over the centuries is a wine culture deeply rooted in the island’s identity, shaped by a terroir unlike anything else in the Mediterranean: volcanic soil, fierce Aegean winds, and an intensity of light and heat that pushes the island’s grapes to produce wines of remarkable character and complexity.

The secret lies largely beneath the surface. Santorini’s vines grow in mineral-rich volcanic ash, and to survive the relentless winds that sweep across the island, they are trained into low, basket-shaped spirals — a technique passed down through generations and unchanged for centuries. The result is a grape under considerable stress, and stress, in winemaking, often produces greatness. The island’s signature variety, Assyrtiko, yields crisp, bone-dry whites with a distinctive minerality that has captured the attention of wine lovers worldwide. At the other end of the spectrum, Vinsanto — made from sun-dried grapes and aged for years — is one of Greece’s most celebrated dessert wines: rich, complex and utterly unique to this island.

A visit to one of Santorini’s wineries is one of the most rewarding ways to spend an afternoon on the island. Many estates offer guided tours through the vineyards as well as tastings, and most are set in spectacular locations that make the experience as visual as it is vinous. Among the finest are Santo Wines in Pyrgos, with its breathtaking terrace overlooking the caldera — perfect for a sunset tasting; Venetsanos Winery in Megalochori, a beautifully restored historic estate with panoramic caldera views and premium wines paired with small bites; Estate Argyros in Episkopi Gonia, one of the island’s largest and most respected producers, renowned for its exceptional Assyrtiko and Vinsanto; and Domaine Sigalas near Oia, a beloved boutique winery with guided tastings on a covered terrace overlooking the vineyards and the Aegean. Get in touch with us and we will be happy to arrange your wine tasting experience at some of the island’s most celebrated estates.
